Employee Advocacy

Also known as: Employee Ambassadors, Employee Brand Advocacy

Employee advocacy is the promotion of a company by its own employees on their personal social media profiles, sharing its news and their own expertise. Done well, it reaches people the company page never would, with the credibility of a colleague rather than a corporate account.

Advocacy works because people engage with people. Together, employees’ networks are often far larger than the company page’s following, and a colleague vouching for the work reads very differently from a brand promoting itself. Posts about what it is like to work somewhere also help with hiring.

Programmes often stall for the same reasons: employees are not sure what they may share, feel awkward promoting their employer, or are handed copy that does not sound like them. The programmes that last make taking part voluntary, give clear guidelines and train people to post with confidence.

My take

Employee advocacy only works when it is good for the employee too. Nobody wants to be a megaphone for corporate copy, but most people do want to be known as good at what they do. When I coach teams, that is where I start: their expertise and their voice, with the company in the background rather than in every sentence.
