Engagement Rate

Also known as: Engagement, ER

Engagement rate measures how many people interact with a post or account, through likes, comments, shares, saves or clicks, as a percentage of its audience. That audience can be reach, impressions or followers, so two rates are only comparable when they are calculated the same way.

The usual formula divides total engagements by reach, impressions or followers and multiplies by 100. Each version answers a different question. Engagement by reach shows how people responded once they actually saw the post. Engagement by followers is easier to compare between accounts, but it inflates the result for posts that travel far beyond the account’s own followers.

Not every interaction carries the same weight. A like takes a second, while a comment, a save or a share means the content earned real attention, and platforms tend to weigh those signals more heavily. Smaller accounts with an engaged community often score higher than large ones, which is one reason brands look beyond follower counts when they choose creators to work with.

My take

I care less about how many people liked a post than about what they did next. A comment that starts a real conversation, a save or a share to a friend tells me the content earned its place. Those are the numbers I act on, rather than the ones I would simply admire.
