The 4+1 Hashtag Method

Last updated 15/10/2026

Also known as: 4+1 Hashtag Method, Four Plus One Hashtag Method

The 4+1 Hashtag Method, developed by Christophe Moons, is a way of choosing five hashtags per post, each with its own job. Four help new people find the post by naming its niche, audience, problem and content category, and the fifth, a branded hashtag, helps them remember who made it.

Its short form is four to be found, one to be remembered. Instagram capped posts and Reels at five hashtags in December 2025, but for the method that cap is the occasion rather than the reason. Hashtags no longer drive reach on their own: they tell the platform what a post is about and who it is for, and five precise labels do that better than thirty generic ones.

Each discovery hashtag answers one question. Niche: what is the precise topic? Audience: which group should recognise themselves? Problem: what frustration does the post answer? Content category: is it a tip, a tutorial, a review or a look behind the scenes? Mid-sized hashtags, roughly 10,000 to 500,000 posts, work best, because a post can actually be seen in them. The branded hashtag stays the same on every post.

The method is built for Instagram and shrinks on other platforms: three to five hashtags on LinkedIn, two or three on Facebook and a single niche hashtag on Threads, where people join conversations rather than follow a brand.
