Thought Leadership

Also known as: Thought Leader, Thought Leadership Content

Thought leadership is content that offers an original, expert view on a subject, to shape how people think rather than repeat what everyone else says. Done well, it builds the credibility that makes people seek out the expert, or the company behind them.

The label is overused. Plenty of content that calls itself thought leadership is opinion without evidence, or a summary of what others have already said. The real thing has a specific point of view, and it is useful enough that people act on it or pass it on.

It is a long game. Thought leadership builds through consistent publishing on a few subjects, in posts, articles, newsletters, talks and interviews, and through the conversations it starts. For founders and executives, it often does more for a company’s reputation than the company’s own channels, because audiences tend to trust people more readily than brands.

My take

Thought leadership is earned in the specifics. An opinion only becomes leadership when it is backed by something you have done, tested or seen up close, and when it helps someone make a better decision. That is why I treat LinkedIn as a library rather than a stage: what I publish there should still be useful a year from now.
