Storytelling

Also known as: Brand Storytelling, Narrative Marketing, Story-Driven Marketing

Storytelling in marketing is the use of narrative, with a character, a tension and a change, to make a message easier to understand, remember and trust. It turns facts about a person or a brand into something people can follow and recognise themselves in.

Stories hold attention because they raise a question the audience wants answered: what happens next, and what does it mean for me? In marketing that can be a founder’s origin, a client’s problem and how it was solved, a mistake and what it taught, or the reasoning behind a decision.

Good brand storytelling is specific and honest. Invented drama, and stories that exist only to deliver a sales message, are easy to spot and cost trust rather than build it. The strongest stories usually come from real experience, chosen because they carry a lesson the audience can use.

My take

I came to social media through journalism, not marketing, and that shaped everything about how I work. A platform can tell you how to tell a story, but never which story is worth telling. Find that first, and the format becomes the easy part.
