Brand Voice

Also known as: Tone of Voice, Verbal Identity

Brand voice is the consistent personality a brand or person expresses in words, shaped by what they say, how they say it and what they would never say. It stays the same on every channel, while the tone adjusts to the platform, the audience and the moment.

A brand voice is usually defined by a handful of traits, each with an example of what it sounds like and what it does not. Writing those down turns a feeling into something a team, a freelancer or an AI tool can apply, and it is the difference between content that sounds like one source and content that sounds like a committee.

Voice is easiest to hear in the details: word choice, sentence length, whether a brand says I or we, and how it handles humour, complaints and bad news. Consistency matters more than any single trait, because trust grows when people know what to expect.

My take

I do not believe in inventing a brand voice from a list of adjectives. The voice is usually already there, in how you explain your work when you are not trying to sound like a brand, and the job is to find it, write it down and use it on purpose. The test I apply to my own writing is simple: could this only have come from me?
