Community Management

Also known as: Online Community Management, Community Manager

Community management is the day-to-day work of building and looking after the relationship between a brand and its audience, in comments, messages and groups. It covers starting conversations, answering questions and handling criticism, with the aim of a community that talks with the brand and with each other.

It differs from social media management, which focuses on what a brand publishes. Community management focuses on what happens next: the replies, the direct messages, the questions in groups and the conversations that start without the brand. A community manager is often the first to notice a complaint, a trend or an idea worth acting on.

Good community management is consistent and human. It answers quickly and in a recognisable voice, welcomes newcomers, steps in when a discussion turns hostile and passes useful feedback to the people who can act on it. Over time, it turns followers into regulars, and regulars into advocates who recommend the brand without being asked.

My take

As community manager for We Are Tennis Belgium, I have learned that a community is built in the replies more than in the posts. People remember how a brand answered them long after they have forgotten what it published. That makes every comment, question and complaint a small piece of the brand, worth handling with care.
