What counts as a conversion depends on the goal, and so does the base it is measured against: visitors to a page, clicks on an ad or recipients of an email. Comparing conversion rates only makes sense when both are defined the same way. Rates also vary widely by industry, offer, price and traffic source, so the most useful benchmark is usually a brand’s own past results.
Improving conversion rate is often cheaper than buying more traffic. Clearer offers, a page that matches the ad, fewer form fields, faster loading and genuine proof all help, and A/B testing shows which changes work. A rising conversion rate on falling traffic can also mean the audience has become better qualified, which is not always a bad sign.
